Sleep Tight when the Bed and Mattress is Right
Studies on the health benefits of sleep said that those who are able to get at least six hours of sleep a day live longer. That is because sleep helps get rid off stress and keeps your weight and cholesterol levels in check, reducing your risk of developing heart problems. But to get that golden slumber, you first have to choose the right bed and mattress. When buying bedroom furniture, you must consider the available space in your room, the design by which you would match your new bed frame, and of course, your budget.
Investing more on the mattress than the bed frame is deemed wiser. Nowadays, residential or rental spaces are becoming smaller and more expensive, so more people are just buying the mattress and discarding the use of bed frames. Mattresses can only be used up until 15 years; beyond that, it may not be able to support your body properly and you might also be running the risk of sleeping on a mattress teeming with dust mites and other bacteria.
When choosing a mattress, make sure that it allows your spine to rest in its natural, S-shaped curve. Your buttocks, heels, shoulders, and head must also be in their proper resting position. A mattress that is too firm will make you lie down with your back flat on the bed, whereas your back should be following the normal curvature of your spine. If the mattress is too soft, it will sag down as it carries your weight and your body will not have any proper support as well. All things considered, you can choose among the five major types of mattress: innerspring, memory foam, latex, air mattress, and mattresses for adjustable and sofa beds.
Types of Mattress
The core or the support layer of the innerspring mattress is made of steel coil springs. There is no correlation between the mattress’ coil count and the comfort it can provide. However, sleep experts say that a 390 coil-count is enough to provide comfort and proper support for your back. The inside of the mattress is stuffed with a number of materials like fibre, mesh, cotton, wool, poly-urethane or gel-infused foams. The quilt makes up the top layer of the mattress, and is stitched together with the ticking to give it a softer and smoother finish.
Another option would be the latex mattress which is made of natural and synthetic rubber. It provides the right amount of firmness to support your back and is more affordable than the memory foam mattress. Latex foams perform better than the traditional spring mattress and fare better at reviews in terms of durability and comfort. Latex mattresses are also known for their eco-friendly and non-toxic biodegradable components.
The memory foam mattress is made of visco-elastic foam that follows the outline of your body as it responds to changes in temperature and then slowly springs back to its original shape; hence, it is called the memory foam. You also need not worry about waking up your partner when you move on your side of the bed, as the memory foam can decrease the impact of your movements.
The air mattress is similar to the innerspring mattress, but instead of spring coils, it uses air-filled chambers, and has foam layers on top. This mattress type is good for those who are suffering from spinal cord injuries because its firmness can adjusted to meet the patient’s needs. Also, multiple-chambered air mattresses can prevent the other side from lumping and ballooning when someone lay down or sat on the opposite side of the mattress.
Except for the innerspring mattress, all these types of mattresses are suitable for adjustable beds. People who have sleep apnea, acid reflux, and hip or back pain can benefit from an elevated sleeping position, where the upper body is more propped up. Always remember to make sure that your body has the right support. Sleeping on thin mattresses (like those in sofa beds) are discouraged by sleeping experts because it provides no proper support at all for your body.
Types of Bed Frame
Although more people are discarding bed frames, some would still prefer having their own for aesthetic reasons. The most commonly used types are the adjustable bed frames (with removable metal frames and the least expensive), mission bed frames (the main design for the headboard and footboard consists of vertical wooden slats) and sleigh bed frames (with carved sleigh-like headboard and footboard). Bed frames such as the canopy (four-poster bed joined by a frame on top and decorated with drapes), captain’s (with built-in drawers and storage spaces), and platform (a bed that is slightly elevated from the ground) are more expensive and most of the time are made upon request.
