Spend some time with Samsung’s Galaxy S21 Ultra and you’ll quickly discover that the phone is out to deliver an unrivalled smartphone experience. Everything about the S21 Ultra screams ‘bigger’ and ‘better’, with more cameras, superior specs and a greater set of features.
One of the S21 Ultra’s most touted features is its new S Pen compatibility, but don’t discount the Note 20 Ultra just yet – an S Pen is not included with the S21 Ultra, nor does the phone offer a place to store it. You’ll need to purchase a separate wallet-style case that comes with the stylus, which won’t be to everyone’s taste.
That said, the functionality is certainly welcome, as is the new Adaptive Refresh Rate mode, which finally allows you to set the display to 120Hz at the full QHD+ resolution, meaning you will no longer have to choose between one or the other.
As for the S21 Ultra’s photographic prowess, you now get five cameras on the rear led by a 108MP primary sensor, along with two telephoto cameras which offer up to a whopping 100x zoom. On the front side, you get an impressive wide-angle 40MP camera for selfies. Once again, 8K video recording is available, and there’s a new ‘Director’s View’ feature which allows you to record with the phone’s front and rear cameras simultaneously, which is sure to be handy for reaction videos.
In an effort to make its extreme ‘Space Zoom’ functionality more palatable and worthwhile, Samsung has implemented a handy ‘tripod lock’ feature in its camera software that steadies your shots at the 30x and 100x zoom levels. Simply tap on the subject you’re trying to photograph to drastically reduce the amount of jumping around in your viewfinder image.
Specs-wise, the Galaxy S21 Ultra is expectedly a beast, offering Samsung’s latest Exynos 2100 (5nm) chipset, 5G connectivity, a max storage amount of 512GB and up to 16GB of RAM. Of course, some will bemoan Samsung’s decision to drop the microSD slot from this year’s model, while the lack of a power brick in the box will prove contentious for others, but there are enough new features here to justifiably earn the ‘Ultra’ in this remarkable handset’s name.
